*(Complimentary Lunch provided)****

*Model Based Systems Engineering, Design, and Simulation for Project Orion**
***

Sponsored by IEEE Huntsville Computer Society (CS), Huntsville Employee
Network (HEN), and Joint Robotics & Automation Controls Systems (JRACS)
chapter.. That said, you don’t need to be an IEEE member to attend.

So you've heard the buzz about Model Based Design and Systems Engineering
and you're rightfully skeptical. Very few people and projects have ever
done this successfully. We're pleased to have Paul Sullivan of General
Dynamics C4 Systems present this topic to you:

Since our community is largely defense and space oriented, Paul will
present a model of Project Orion; the nuclear powered space ship proposed
in the 1950s. He will show you the Rhapsody SysML model for it, execute a
simple yet complete simulation of the SysML model using the model's states,
and then demonstrate a parametric trade study for various technologies to
initially launch Orion: 100% nuclear, chemical rocket, and rail gun. Paul
will also present a 3D mockup model using CATIA v5 CAD and Adobe 3D PDF via
SAP/Right Hemisphere, complete with flyby and simulated flight motion

For those unfamiliar with Project Orion, it was a project conceived by
General Dynamics’ General Atomic. General Atomics is now a separate
company renowned for its Predator and Reaper UAVs. The crew compartment in
this colossal spacecraft exceeds was designed for a 100 man crew to travel
in comforts similar to a 1950s era Cruise Liner. Dr. Werner Von Braun of
NASA’s Marshal Space Flight Center requested a 1000 ton, 40 crew version to
be launched with his Saturn V first stage, but the project was shelved for
a variety of reasons..****

*Title: Systems & Software Co-Design &
Simulation for Project Orion in SysML and UML*
*Date: Monday, May 21st, 2012*
*Location: Alabama Robotics Technology Park, in Auditorium*
http://www.alabamartp.org/
*Time: 11:00am – 1:00pm*
*Speaker: Paul Sullivan of General Dynamics*****

The meeting takes place the Alabama Robotics Technology
Park<http://www.alabamartp.org/>(RTP). This state-of-the-art facility
contains classrooms to teach
engineers and technicians how to program robot and PLC/SCADA devices from
Kuka, Cloos, Allen Bradley, and others **free of charge by actual company
trainers**, to companies that install the devices.

Their auditorium boasts comfortable seating for 100 at engineering desks
and ergonomic chairs. The facility contains a large screen display t
comparable to the screens at the Monaco Theater at Bridge Street! A SysML
model of Project Orion will be shown and integrated with a 3D pdf
simulation of the Orion Spacecraft. The crew compartment in this colossal
spacecraft exceeds 4,000 long tons and is designed for a 100 man crew (this
is roughly 15 times larger than the Saturn V).
**NOTE** I leave it to you to challenge these facts. **

The RTP also boasts an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) and radio test ranges;
it is in the process of competing for certification to test Unmanned Aerial
Vehicles and Systems (UAV/S) in an FAA-sponsored program. It also houses an
incubator for several innovative small businesses that could make ideal
partners for your company or others.

Huntsville Section will provide a *FREE* Boxed Lunch at 11:00am and Paul’s
presentation occurs from 11:15 – 12:10pm. There is an optional tour of the
manufacturing cell at the RTP from 12:15 – 1:00pm. Those that wish to stay
for the tour are welcome, and those who wish to leave early to get back to
work are free to leave at their convenience.

Well, I can type for hours on this announcement, but I won’t. You will have
to come to this *AWESOME* technology exchange and see for yourself! J

This facility is a MUST see, and *WELL* worth the 20 mile drive (we
encourage car-pooling, since we support *GREEN* initiatives and conserving
scarce resources.

*We look forward to your attending!*

*R.S.V.P.* to Sonya.Dillard at nasa.gov by noon on Friday, 5/18/2012, and
request one of the following selections for your boxed lunch: Beef, Turkey,
Ham, or Veggie sandwich. If you do not specify in your email, you will get
the default Turkey sandwich. **

*Speaker’s Bio: *
Paul Sullivan is a seasoned engineer and practitioner of Model-Based Design
and Engineering, using his skills on project varying from Air Traffic
Control to Air, Land and Sea Attack to Commercial Aircraft.

He started his career as Marine Corps Officer where he acquired C4ISR
systems including GCCS, C2PC, AFATDS, ATACC/CTAPS(TBMCS), TAOC, TCO, and
IAS/NIPS, NBC-HAZWARN, and TRSS (REMBASS). He has since worked at Procter &
Gamble, Mead Johnson, Harman-Becker, plus Spirit AeroSystems and Boeing
Charleston (Global Aeronautica) designing and the implementing SAP ERP for
Purchasing, Engineering, and Manufacturing including 3-D CAD and BOM and
Work Instructions integration to the Shop Floor. All eleven implementations
were FAA, FDA, or Automotive systems of record.

Paul Sullivan works at General Dynamic C4 Systems in Huntsville, and has
B.S. in Computer Science and M.S. in Software Engineering.****
