[ML-General] general Digest, Vol 90, Issue 1

What Tim says about tinkering is dead on I built a prusa I3 from parts last
year and it runs constantly. My oldest son (12 yo) runs it as well as I do
BUT seems like I swap nozzles, unclog jams, etc etc all the time. You can
make almost anything you need with it and we are getting pretty fast at
fixin so it is not a big deal. Just be prepared. You may be able to get up
and printing soon but pretty soon the bed gets out of level or nozzle jams
or something and you have to fix it.

Mine was originally 200x290x190 but I recently extended the vertical (Z)
axis to 460mm because I want to be able to print fairly large nose cones for
mid and high powered rockets. The latest print was 125mm diameter and about
350mm long. The I3 works great but like he said, there is no best. Find
one you think is big enough for what you want to print and go for it.

I built mine out of 1010 extrusions instead of stamped or molded parts
because I knew I would likely want to expand it. Buy longer threaded rod,
chrome rods and 1010 and change one parameter in the firmware and you are
good to go.

Jeff

Is this one the best for the money?

How much trouble are they to use?

Thanks,

David

Printrbot Simple Metal
http://printrbot.com/project/simple-metal/

Easy enough to get up and running with any 3d printer today. but you'll be
constantly tinkering and fixing little things.

Tim, are you saying that all 3D printers require much tinkering and
fixing? Or just the Prusa i3?

All printers require tinkering and fixing.

There is no best one. Which one is best for you depends on what you want
to do with it.

All 3D printers. (at least of the "Fused Deposition Modeling" type)

I have most recently been able to play around with a Makerbot Replicator
5th gen printer.
Purported to be the pinnacle of the "just press print" machines.
And it mostly succeeds. But you still have to go through leveling the bed,
the filament still jams, feed rates need to be adjusted depending on the
filament type and vendor and the humidity in the room and how the stars are
aligned. It isn't just this one expensive printer. It's just the nature of
this technology.

I still recommend the Printrbot Simple Metal to a lot of people. it's
really good for the cost. Everyone I know who has bought one has been
printing within 30minutes. However, everyone I know who's bought one has
also started making major modifications to the printer within the first
week. That might be more because I know a lot of tinkerers and makers
though. :P

Just my observations on the matter.
-Tim

Well, hell. Half of those caveats apply to ink jet printers as well.

I paid $400 for the Wanhao Duplicator i3 and have no regrets. It's at the
shop if you want to take a look at it. The current model has a few upgrades
over mine, but the price is still the same. The tinkering I have had to do
has been more or less related to bed leveling or my own user errors.
