Can you build it cheaper? Maybe marginally but is it worth the trouble? You can buy all the parts for  $200 but then you need plans, software, calibration, time. Did I mention time? 

There's good kits on eBay for under $200 but the key word is "kit" 

I think Norm had some experience with a kit.
