As a practical matter, we should probably looking at directional antennas for the Five Points area and links to local repeaters on Monte Sano.  I'm just not seeing a HF yagi on a rotator working very well in our current location.

Here are some home brew ideas for a crank up tower.

you could also automate it, in case you needed to lower it remote due to high winds.

Overall goal is to stand up a structure that we can mount radio equipment to, that will get us better Line-of-Sight in the 5 points area.

I think you're right about the Tower, it's too tall for us to be able to tilt it and not hit a powerline, so servicing it would be difficult.  Even with obstacles out of the way, a tower tilt is expensive compared to a mast tilt.

It sounds like we may have to make a telescoping mast instead of a tilting mast.

Jeff, We have a 40' mast already and decided not to install it at the shop because of interference from the overpasses and proximity to the giant metal building. Am I misremembering? Would a 30' pole be better than the 40' tower that we have, but haven't used? I'm just trying to understand what you're planning.Phil

If anyone has access to a 30' or larger pole they would be willing to part with, we're exploring the option of erecting a mast at the makeshop to hang antennas on, for both Ham and consumer grade equipment.

A roof mounted antenna is being explored as well, though it's harder to service.
