It's UDF and I already have copies of it on a usb stick and an sd
card. The problem is the interface; matching the ssd's signals to the
50 pin atapi. 50 pin atapi does exist in the real world (well,
computers) besides just car's nav data formats. I can physically see
the chip that handles the interface (Panasonic MN103S26EDC) but it is
impossible with my limited knowledge to find continuity between the 50
pin ffc connector and its corresponding pin on the chip, for reasons
already mentioned.

Another thing I wish to do (later) is reverse engineer the control
program so we can remove the lawyer screen requirement during actual
use as well as remove the inhibition of initiating a phone call while
the car is not in "park." That is an ever larger undertaking and is
pure software but requires some knowledge about the control processor
and where it jumps to (address) upon initialization. AIUI, that can be
up to 32 vectors! Sheesh, how could anyone keep control of such
things??? If anyone is interested, I can forward the info I have on
that subject. EVERYONE complains about having to push the lawyer
screen button just to get the gps to work -e-v-e-r-y- single time you
crank the stupid car.

It all began when the current physical dvd drive failed in the car.
Replacements are hugely expensive, so I'd like to use ssd hardware for
0) much cheaper cost, 1) much faster access speed especially during
bootup, and 2) much easier to test different variations of the control
program when I get to that phase. If I replace the physical dvd drive,
that means creating another dvd every time I want to try something
different with the control program. Aside, there are other control
programs on that disk like the one that controls the cars sound system
and the one that controls the cars phone system, and so on. None of
them are working very well right now.

I think it is a Kenwood design.

The DVD drive is labeled DVS-3010, replaced by DVS-3150. There is a
place in the Netherlands I can get the drive from but total cost from
them is nearly $400 JUST for a drive!!! I can't just slap in a normal
$20 dvd drive because of that 50 pin flat flex cable that it uses to
talk to the computer with. However, the docs I have found all state
that it is an ATAPI (IDE) interface.

I bought that USB logic analyzer and cables and some other breakout
boards and stuff -just- for this project, but am hoping they will come
in handy on other, future projects.

Thanks, guys,
continuing the project because you'd actually have to feed DVD-format
video into the system in a fairly specific way that doesn't lend well
to swapping among movies without some additional external control.
If it's GPS and map data, it means the system is likely accessing the
disc as a standard file system. If you're really lucky, the system can
read FAT32 and not just the DVD file system format (ISO9660 or UDF
variants). I'm not sure what all will go into tricking the system into
thinking the SSD or HD is a DVD drive.

Can you put the DVD in a computer and see files on it? If so, what
format does your computer's drive report for the disc?
