Yep this is just like the egg drop except it needs to be able to handle landing upside down and sideways 1000 times as it gets tossed around the mailing system.
I was thinking about some sort of web of rubber bands attached to the cupcake all around for shock absorption in every direction. The cupcake would be held in place by wrapping it up in a few layers of plastic wrap then just taping the rubber bands to the plastic wrap and then to every side of the box. We could then build that same frame around the outside edges of the box with small sticks of wood to keep the box from getting crushed under stacks of boxes on top of it.

I'm going to test my Rubber Band WebNest (TM) idea tonight at the shop.

On Wed, Feb 15, 2012 at 3:27 PM, r Carbee <rcarbee@gmail.com> wrote:
We all remember in school (some of you) or have heard about the experiment of dropping an egg from a high building and whoever's didn't break was the winner...this is a spin on that. You can actually bake a cake inside an egg and fill it with ganache frosting. It is kind of an inside out cup-cake idea. It probably wouldn't win but would get a reaction.

Har har. My last message was in response to the "Makers Wanted" thing from
Proper Television.

As for the cupcakes, what about some kind of gimbal system? Have you seen
those "no spill" childrens bowls they sell in walmart and such. I think if
we constructed something like that and stuck it in the shipping box, then
even if it got turned up side down or whatever the icing wouldn't get
shmushed.
If we make a square gimbal to fit inside the box I bet we could even ship a
whole tray!
