I think that the opportunity to solder should be there if parents/teachers will consent to it. Kids need to learn somewhere, and I'm guessing 90%+ don't have anywhere else to learn (that's why this club exists). Give them a good safety lesson and let them try it in small groups (maybe even 1-on-1) with lots of direction. So I would ask if the teacher will permit it and then move from there. I like the back-up plan, however.

That's also a good way to get the same lesson across without the hard learned lesson of how hot soldering irons can be.

I am the sixth grade science teacher at Madison Elementary and I have the opportunity to sponsor an after school STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) club starting January 2014. I want students to have the opportunity learn about STEM careers and to experience some exciting hands on activities. Our club will meet on Monday afternoons from 2:40-4:00. Does your makers local have guest presenters or contacts for people who might be interested in sharing their career experience with these students? I would welcome any information that you can provide.

Thank you.
