Homeland Security Investigations just moved into offices down the hall from me. I learned that Huntsville has the second highest number of people with security clearances in the US. Washington D.C. is first.

The background check process is REALLY simple
and should take just a few minutes. I am pretty
sure they are just making sure you are not a
serial killer or sex offender. The process is
carried out on the Verified Volunteers website
(which I believe several charity/volunteer
organizations use). If you sign up as a
volunteer you will be given a link to a website
where you create an account and provide some
basic info. I am pretty sure you do not even
have to give your SSN if you do not want to. I
would say 15 minutes of your time, if that.

As far as cost, it is either FREE or $2.50. You
will be asked if you want to help defray the costs
by paying $2.50, but if you do not want to, FIRST
will cover the entire thing at no cost to the
volunteer. In my opinion, the background check is
not really an obstacle if you are interested in
volunteering.
Hello everyone,

As some of you know Tyler
and I have been helping out
a local High School Robotics
Team (Team 5096 Monkey
Madness). The team has been
doing a lot of work trying
to promote the FIRST
organization in Alabama. As
part of their effort, they
are hosting a qualifier
competition here in
Huntsville on Saturday,
January 24th and still need
some volunteers. We will be
hosting up to 24 teams from
mostly Georgia and Alabama
and those who advance will
go onto the Georgia State
Championship. The main
volunteer positions that are
open are judging positions
where you get to be part of
assigning some of the many
awards that are given out.
This is a very important
task as the awards play a
huge role in deciding who
advances to the state
competiton. Judging
comprises of a judging
session with the teams as
well as your interaction
with the teams throughout
the day in the pit and
during the competition. If
you are interested in
volunteering, please let me
know and I will pass your
contact information onto the
event organizers. It is
really fun to see the
ingenuity and energy all of
these teams bring to
robotics!

Here is some more
information if you are
interested. Fell free to
ask me any questions you may
have.

Game video (skip to 2:50):
http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/ftc/game

Volunteer Resources: http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/ftc/volunteer-resources

Note: If you volunteer you
will have to pass a very
simple background test
(Required by FIRST)

If you do not feel
comfortable with being a
judge, but still want to
volunteer at the event,
their is probably plenty of
other logistical stuff that
needs to happen.
