Just as a followup to a long-dead thread, I've been using Draft Sight quite a bit recently and it's been fitting the bill perfectly for 2D laser-cutting designs. It's installed on the laser cutter computer in the fab lab (under the DAssult start menu folder) if anyone else wants to use it.

Brian Oborn (bobbytables)

On Fri, May 15, 2015 at 11:43 AM, Tony Williams <tony@intersouth.net> wrote:

Yes, I have used draft sight and it is a good free Autocad Lite
replacement.
Almost all the commands are the same as Autocad.
You have to renew the lic every few months for the free version.
If you are interested in a 3D cad that will output CAM files for 3d
printing or CNC and is free, I would recommend Fusion 360.
It has a ACAD 360 component that allows limited 2D drawings.
The CAM part of Fusion 360 is quite good and I use it routinely to
produce parts on my home CNC mill.
Also Fusion 360 is free for home or hobby use.

Has anyone used DraftSight before? It's by the same company
that does SolidWorks so I assume that it's a solid product and
there's a free edition that's limited to 2D. I'm wondering if
this might be an easier tool than Inkscape for making designs
to be lasercut?
