<div dir="ltr">How does expressing a hope that 'real hackers' would invalidate our national elections by cracking the election systems in place, to 'make sure' someone else doesn't do it in any way help the situation, within your thought experiment? The act of cracking a machine invalidates its output, whether the cracker is wearing a white or a black hat.<div><br><div>The only real way to secure the election would be for those states with electronic ballot machines to go back to paper ballots, so that there is a physical proof of a vote. The best outcome, if people were really worried about blackhat cracking, would be to remove computers from the system. Additionally, though some voting machines have been shown to have hardware vulnerabilities, these are mitigated by vote staff watching to make sure that no one plugs anything into the back of the machines. At the end of the day it returns to trust. You either trust that your vote will count or you don't. If you don't, then don't bother voting. Problem solved.
