I just found out that May 13 is Mother’s day. It would be irresponsible to
cause anyone conflict on this important day. Therefore, the first meeting
of “AI and the future” will be moved back a week to May 20. There is no
important national holiday on May 20, although NASA has scheduled an
eclipse of the sun on that day. As the eclipse will only be visible in the
western states of this country, this should not present a conflict with our
meeting. There is a map to the meeting location on the following webpage:
http://www.88buffet.com/
Buffet 88 is in the shopping center located at University and Enterprise.
Check out the “culture” tab on the website if you are interested in spooky
Chinese stuff.
When you walk in the front door of the buffet, you will be on a bridge with
stone walls on both sides. A cascade of water is flowing down each wall
into a pond that runs under the bridge -- designed to instill a tranquil
and peaceful mood in the visitor. Inside the restaurant on the left, near
the first food bar, is an ornately carved wooden frame. The carving
surrounds the entrance to a couple smaller rooms. Our reserved table is in
the first room within this framed area. You may eat or not. There is
coffee, tea, and coke -- but no beer. If this proves to be a problem, we
can schedule the next meeting somewhere else.
The next meeting may be in cyberspace. If you are unfamiliar with “second
life”, check out the excellent introduction at:

I am far from expert at getting around SL, and SL is far from the holodeck,
but it is an interesting start. Italians have a saying: “Nothing is
invented and perfected at the same time.” We do have a group member who is
an expert.
In recent AI news, there are two items you might want to check out.
Google-X (the division of google that tests out new concepts) is developing
a driverless car. That’s right; google is getting into the hardware
business ---- as well as the AI business. Another interesting development
is that Rodney Brooks has resigned as head of AI research at MIT. He has
founded a company called Heartland Robotics. It is headquartered in a high
security warehouse in Boston, and venture capitalists are showering him
with money. I wonder what will walk out of that warehouse.
