[General] Raspberry Pi PS 5V Switching 1A

They keep talking about switching power supplies. I did not realize
that the pi PS was an issue until I looked it up.
I am still having problems with the USB on the pi. Right now I have a
GPS attached that stops working after about 1 day. I was trying to
turn one of the pi's into an accesspoint about two months ago and I
had the same problem. The thing would just lock up.
I have a 1A kindle charger powering it right now and I just checked
and it looks like the GPS is offline. Do these things drop USB
devices like this? I am using archlinux ARM if it matters.
My next step I suppose it to try a better PSU. Am I correct that I
want it to be switching? In the end I would like to build sealed
devices and such that I can power with POE (access point) but I cannot
move forward if I cannot get a simple low power GPS to work.
Something like this maybe:

Thanks.
