Speaking of soldering irons in kids' hands; I have had a good degree of
success with children 5 to 10-year-olds with soldering irons building
meatstand.com's (http://meatstand.com) ST:EAK kits.  It takes one-on-one
engagement to keep the kids safe when they are handling an iron for the
first time.  Recommend it be done for classes where the student to
instructor ratio is less than 2:1.
