Lifehacker just has an article about just this topic.

Also if you can find the right security equipment on eBay you can set it to
contact you instead of the alarm company. Or you can get a panel and hack
it.

Hello from Mojave!

I'm looking for some advice on how to build a security system with
surveillance and alarms for some buildings in Mojave, CA. Right now, we've
been having an issue with businesses in the business district getting
vandalized.
My thoughts have been that something similar to the camera system
at Makers Local 256 would be useful in the community. Would anyone be able
to refer me as to how it is built?
Another idea for a system from one of our residents:

Would any of you have any references to hacks or ideas that could
lead to hacks that could help Mojave out?
